Mexican Flying Saucers: The Forgotten Encounters

For some reason, Mexico has always been a UFO hotspot. The country’s skies are filled from time to time with bizarre objects of very diverse shapes and sizes. Some are diamond-shaped. Some are glowing orbs. Some are triangular. Some look like classic flying saucers as seen in the 1960s sci-fi movies. In this episode of Mexico Unexplained, we will look at some little-known sightings of the traditional metallic discs that one instinctively thinks of when pondering the UFO question. These five sightings – which took places across the vast expanse of the Mexican Republic – have been overlooked, repressed or simply forgotten about.

Number one:
On or about March 29, 1996, a young American and a friend visited the ruins at Teotihuacan for sightseeing. They arrived at the site around 1:00 p.m. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred during the visit. They climbed the Pyramid of the Sun, took several photographs, and later returned to Mexico City by taxi. In the summer of 2025, the individual purchased a scanner in order to digitize some photographs for a personal website. While reviewing pictures from a photo album to select ones for scanning, an anomaly was noticed in one of the images from the Teotihuacan trip. A small speck appeared in the sky above the Pyramid of the Sun. Upon magnification, to his surprise, the speck resembled a classic flying saucer.

Number two:
On August 25, 2002, three college students from San Diego, California, witnessed an extraordinary unidentified aerial phenomenon while in their car on the U.S. side of the border, preparing to park. The observers were positioned with a view across the border toward Tijuana. The object was described as an exceptionally long and slender craft, approximately 200 feet in length, with a thin, elongated profile. It appeared metallic and silver in color – highly reflective and shiny—distinctly unlike any conventional aircraft, helicopter, or other known aerial vehicle the witnesses had ever encountered. The craft emitted no sound whatsoever and produced no visible exhaust, contrails, or other propulsion signatures, gliding silently through the sky.  At the time of the sighting, the weather was clear and hot, which made accurate distance estimation challenging due to atmospheric conditions and the vast border landscape. Notably, no commercial or private aircraft were present in the vicinity during the observation of the object itself. However, such aircraft became visible later on the witnesses’ return to their vehicle. The group did not observe the object’s departure or any maneuvers, as their view was temporarily obstructed by an intervening structure. By the time they navigated around the obstruction, the craft had vanished completely, leaving no trace. This incident occurred in a region known for occasional reports of unusual aerial phenomena along the U.S.-Mexico border, though no widely publicized or matching accounts from that exact date appear in major public UFO databases like NUFORC based on available records. The witnesses emphasized the object’s anomalous appearance and behavior, which defied explanation as any conventional aircraft or natural phenomenon. No photographs or additional evidence were mentioned in the account.

Number three:
Jalisco is widely regarded as one of Mexico’s primary hotspots for UFO activity, alongside other states, with numerous reported sightings over the years, including mass events in the region. On the evening of Friday, December 15, 2006, a young woman was driving home from Tlajomulco de Zúñiga in her pickup truck. While traveling along the highway, she noticed a large, round, flat object through the left window. The object, described as a huge disc or saucer, featured rows of red, blue, and yellow lights and moved slowly parallel to her vehicle on the left side. The object was estimated to be approximately 100 meters in diameter and at an altitude of about 150 feet. It was so massive that the witness likened its apparent size to that of a city block. Behind the first object, two additional similar objects followed, while two more appeared on the opposite side of the highway, for a total of five enormous disc-shaped craft. At one point, one of the objects crossed directly over the highway above the witness’s vehicle. This caused the pickup truck to shake violently and momentarily lose control, with the engine and systems behaving erratically. The driver accelerated to prevent the vehicle from stalling or shutting down completely. The young woman and a friend driving behind her pulled over, along with other motorists who had also stopped to observe the phenomenon. Several photographs were taken during the event. The witness arrived home later in a state of shock and trembling. The following evening – Saturday, December 16, 2006 – while returning from the same town earlier than the previous night, the young woman observed the objects again, though at a greater distance. Additional photographs were captured on this occasion, which were to be transferred later. The woman’s family has reported having experienced multiple UFO-related incidents over time, viewing this event as one among many in a region known for frequent unexplained aerial phenomena. No specific public records or widespread media coverage of this exact December 2006 incident were identified in available sources, though Jalisco has a documented history of such reports.

Number four:
On December 28, 2010, the witness, accompanied by his mother and younger sister, was traveling by bus from Phoenix, Arizona, to Durango, Mexico. The sighting occurred during the daytime portion of the journey after the group had crossed the border into Mexico. While seated by the window and gazing at the sky, the witness observed a vivid blue sky interspersed with light purple clouds and possibly other subtle colors. Initially mistaking a small object in a clear patch of sky for a cloud, the witness quickly realized it was a distinct disk-shaped craft resembling the classic “flying saucer” often depicted in movies and on television. The object matched the light purple hue of the surrounding clouds and displayed no visible lights. The witness stared at the single UFO for approximately 15 seconds before looking away to alert his mother. Upon pointing it out and looking back, he noticed the object had vanished, and despite searching the sky together, he could not relocate it. The mother remained uncertain about the sighting. Undeterred, the witness continued scanning the sky independently. Roughly a minute and a half later, three additional identical disk-shaped objects appeared in a tight triangular formation. The witness observed this group for about 20 seconds before attempting to point them out again to their mother. However, this was the final sighting: the three objects disappeared, and no further anomalies were seen. The entire encounter lasted only a few minutes in total, with the objects appearing stationary or slow-moving against the daytime sky. No sounds, lights, or other unusual features were noted beyond the distinctive saucer shape and cloud-like coloration, which may have provided some camouflage. No photographs or additional corroborating evidence were mentioned in the account. This report aligns with occasional daytime disk sightings reported in this part of Mexico, though no matching public entries from exactly this date appear in major databases like NUFORC based on available records. The witness emphasized the clarity of the daytime observation and the unmistakable resemblance to stereotypical UFO imagery.

Number five:

On the night of June 13–14, 2025, in the town of Poza Rica, Veracruz, a young man returned home from work around 11:30 p.m. amid heavy rain, wind, and lightning. After sleeping for a short period, the witness awoke around 1:00 a.m. and recalled that clothes had been left outside to dry. Upon stepping outside and looking up at the sky, the witness observed a dark gray, disc-shaped object – described as a dish or flying saucer – hovering in the air. The object featured bright colored lights that turned on and changed colors very slowly. These lights constantly turned off and on in a gradual manner, creating an aura or haze around the object. The witness described the phenomenon as unusual, noting that the lights shifted hues slowly while the disc remained suspended and appeared to hover motionless for about one minute. The witness, doubting his own senses and fearing a hallucination, immediately ran inside to wake family members. The family confirmed seeing the same object, verifying that it was not an illusion. No sound was explicitly mentioned from the object itself during the hovering phase, though the man’s written report to authorities lists “made a sound” among observed characteristics. Additional details include possible marks found on the witness’s body afterward and reactions from animals, though specifics were not provided. After approximately one minute, the disc-shaped object suddenly disappeared into thin air, vanishing completely. This sighting occurred in a region with a historical pattern of UFO reports, particularly in Veracruz state, where Poza Rica has been noted for multiple unexplained aerial phenomena over the years. The witness provided no photographic or video evidence in the account. The description aligns with classic disc-shaped UFO encounters, including hovering behavior, multicolored lighting, and abrupt disappearance.
